Policy on Who Speaks for the Church

The Social Responsibility Committee

The Social Responsibility Committee meets monthly to discuss issues and plan a diverse program of actions. These include:

  • Our support of SHARE, the local food pantry, clothing barn and assistance program hosted by St. Patrick’s Church in Milford.
  • The choice of (local, state, national, global) social justice and environmental protection topics for the letter writing sessions we sponsor (once a month) following Sunday morning worship services
  • Local, state, or national grass roots actions or legislative initiatives in which the committee or individual members of the congregation are participating
  • A fall and/or spring Social Responsibility worship service
  • Donations from our budget or emergency relief fund-raising for various organizations and initiatives
  • Evening programs such as discussions, guest speakers, slide presentations, videos
  • Bulletin board displays on current events
  • Feedback to the UUA Commission on Social Witness on their study/action proposals and draft statements of conscience
  • Participation on the area’s Interfaith Council that sponsors an annual Crop Walk for Hunger and an annual interfaith Martin Luther King day worship service

Recent major events included a forum on the New Hampshire Supreme Judicial Court ruling on (the Claremont issue) funding of public school education in New Hampshire and a Faith in Action Social Justice Empowerment workshop. At this event thirty members of the church discussed ways of having more impact on social justice issues. From that came a focus on assisting established infra-structures that we are working on:

  1. Mitigating the effects of poverty on families in the Souhegan Valley, or
  2. Bringing about societal change in the global community.

Recent evening programs included a discussion of discrimination against gays by the Boy Scouts of America, a slide-lecture on a trip to Honduras with Church World Service, and a showing of a video jointly produced by the Sierra Club and Amnesty International (Environmentalists Under Fire: Defending Those Who Give the Earth a Voice)

Sub-Committees - The Welcoming Congregation Committee and the Partner Church Committee, are sub-committees of the Social Responsibility Committee. At our monthly meetings their chairpersons report to and request assistance for their various projects.

We give continued support to the Unitarian Universalist Service Committee, and participate in their Guest-at-Your-Table program in the fall.  UNICEF Trick-or Treat boxes are also distributed at this time, as are boxes for our partner church in Romania.

Members of the Social Responsibility Committee participate in the NH District Social Responsibility Committee meetings and twice yearly conferences. Membership on the Social Responsibility Committee on the Social Responsibility committee is open to any person willing to commit to a monthly meeting.
